Beverly Rogers
The very first Spirit of Community Arts Award given by Women in Film Nevada, is presented to philanthropist Beverly Rogers, in recognition of her courageous and tireless contributions to the Nevada film and arts community…
The following speech was presented by Dr. Heather Addison at the 2024 Femmy Awards:
My colleague, Professor Brett Levner, was planning to present our inaugural Spirit of Community Arts Award this evening, but unfortunately she is dealing with a severe cold brought home from day- care by her amazingly cute baby, Will! I am going to share her remarks:
My name is Brett Levner and I am the Associate Chair of the Department of Film at UNLV and a board member for Women in Film Nevada, the non-profit organization that oversees the Nevada Women’s Film Festival. We’re here tonight to give a very special award to an extraordinary individual who has engaged in tremendous acts of generosity and vision to enhance and support education, arts and culture in Las Vegas.
This award, the very first Spirit of Community Arts Award given by Women in Film Nevada, is for philanthropist Beverly Rogers, in recognition of her courageous and tireless contributions to the Nevada film and arts community.
Beverly has done something truly incredible for film lovers here in Southern Nevada. She has gifted our city its first and only arthouse cinema, where independent films both old and new can be screened any day of the week inside a beautifully designed theater in downtown Las Vegas.
In a city of over two million people, it always seemed tragic to me that we did not have our very own cool film center like the Angelika or Film Forum in New York City or the Laemmle in L.A. where we could screen the newest most talked about indie flicks, like Joanna Arnow’s The Feeling that the Time for Doing Something has Passed, or catch a classic or international film like John Cassavetes’s A Woman Under the Influence, or Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai.
For many of us, our local arthouse cinema is where we first fell in love with independent and international films, and where we were influenced and inspired to make our own. The absence of such a place is the equivalent of not having an art museum. Sure, we can Google “Picasso” and see images of his paintings, but then we miss the scale and reverence of viewing them in person. An arthouse cinema is a museum for film lovers, a sacred shared space where we can immerse ourselves in the beauty and potential of motion pictures.
There is something mysterious and powerful about watching a film on the big screen with an audience, and it was a memorable moment when our very own arthouse cinema, The Beverly Theater, opened its doors in 2022 to our city’s eager cinephiles, offering a permanent home for independent film and filling a void in Southern Nevada’s cultural landscape. The Beverly Theater is a not-for-profit venue, reinforcing The Rogers Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting the arts in Las Vegas.
And The Beverly Theater will soon be branching out and launching a movie distribution company called Ink Films. They will be providing theatrical distribution for a variety of films, making our burgeoning connection with the film industry that much stronger.
Notably, the Beverly Theater and Ink Films are just two of Beverly’s many contributions to our city. She openly embraces the arts and culture. A lover of films and books, Beverly is Chairman of The Rogers Foundation, which provides college scholarships, sponsors initiatives to adequately fund Nevada schools, recognizes educators, and provides a strong platform for local artists to flourish.
Each step of Beverly’s life has engaged her in the history, art, and potential of Las Vegas. Born in Pennsylvania, she moved here with her family in 1962. Working full-time while attending college, she earned a bachelor’s degree in history from UNLV in 1977 and afterward built a career in radio and television sales and marketing. She married Jim Rogers, owner of Intermountain West Communications (KSNV-TV) in 1997 and worked in marketing for their television stations. She also dedicated herself to service on many local non-profit boards.
In 2003 Beverly returned to UNLV to earn a master’s degree in English. Her passion for reading led her to an interest in the Black Mountain Institute at UNLV, a renowned international center for writers and scholars that offers free literary and cultural events to our community. She has been at the beating heart of the BMI board for many years and BMI itself is now the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute.
Beverly, your inspirational philanthropy and stewardship have forged an indispensable foundation for the flourishing of film and the arts in Las Vegas. It is with sincere gratitude that we honor you with the 2024 Spirit of Community Arts Award.
